PRESS RELEASE
Subject: «Cooperation with the Council of Europe to support vulnerable trans people due to the consequences of COVID-19»
The Greek Transgender Support Association (GTSA), is a voluntary non-governmental organization that promotes the rights and freedoms of trans, gender-diverse, and LGBTI persons in general, as well as sex workers, with this press release informs about its cooperation with the Department of Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity of the Council of Europe, regarding the financial support of the most vulnerable trans persons due to the consequences of COVID-19.
In particular, the Greek Transgender Support Association, in cooperation with the Department of Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity of the Council of Europe, received funding for the second time, with the aim to support the most vulnerable members of the trans community as soon as possible to deal with the consequences of COVID-19, while a total of thirty (30) trans persons will benefit from it. Priority will be given to trans persons who are unemployed or with a proven financial weakness and to older trans persons.
The financial support in all cases will concern trans persons living in the Attica region and specifically, financial coverage of either part of the rent or part of bills that are pending with priority to those persons who are in high precariousness, e.g. have a risk of cut off or have already been cut off, and the same amount will be given to each trans person.
In all cases it will be necessary to provide the following supporting documents:
- Application of the person which is made in the office of GTSA.
- ID card, passport, driver’s license, or other certificate document.
- Unemployment Card (if and when available, in case the applicant does not have an unemployment card, a solemn declaration that is not working).
- Tax Clearance (tax year 2020).
- Certificate of disability 67% or more (in case of a person with a degree of disability).
- Rental agreement in the name of the applicant (if the house is rented).
- Certificate of permanent residence of the applicant (if the residence is proprietary).
- Bills account (electricity or water) in the name of the applicant.
In all cases, the money will be deposited by the GTSA to the person pending electronically, while the GTSA will issue the legal documents and receipts which will be submitted to the Council of Europe, as well as this funding will be recorded in the annual financial report that the GTSA publishes every year in the context of transparency in Civil Society.
The trans persons who are interested can contact us by phone at 210. 9210 697, daily Monday to Friday and hours 10.00 to 15:00, from September 6, 2021 to September 30, 2021, either for clarification or to make an appointment at our office to record their request with providing the necessary information mentioned above. Scheduled meetings will be individual, while all protection measures for COVID-19 will be followed.
We warmly thank the Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity Department of the Council of Europe, which once again recognized the need to address the consequences of the pandemic on trans persons in Council of Europe countries, including our country.
We recognize that the above cannot, of course, meet all the needs of the trans community, which has been severely affected by the effects of COVID-19, which should have already been addressed by Greek State through its own solidarity mechanisms, and we hope that the more urgent and strong needs will be covered.
